The Same Four Things Decide Every Approval

A credit score is one line on a file, not the whole story. Down payment, documents, credit score, and trade equity are the four mechanics Kia Finance America and our bank and credit union partners actually weigh when they read an application. See how each one works below, or apply directly with a soft credit pull that never touches your score.1

Getting Approved Questions

What are the four things that most affect a financing decision?

Down payment, documentation, credit score, and trade equity. A lender reads all four together as one file rather than approving or declining off any single number, which is why two applicants with the same credit score can see different outcomes.

Which of these six pages should I read first?

Pick by what is actually unresolved for you rather than reading in order. If you are not sure you can even start, the documents page is the shortest one. If the number stuck in your head is the monthly payment, the down payment page moves it the most. If you already have a loan or a vehicle to trade, the refinance and negative-equity pages are the two that apply to you and the others largely do not. None of the six is a prerequisite for another.

Is this the same thing as the bad-credit section?

No, and they are built to be read side by side. This hub is organized by mechanic — the same four levers get pulled on every application, whoever is filling it out. The bad-credit overview is organized by situation instead: repossession, bankruptcy, a co-signer, no credit history. Come here for how a decision is assembled; go there for what happens to one specific event on a report.

Which parts of this can I settle before coming in?

All of it except the trade. Reading these pages, gathering documents, and the soft-pull application itself all happen wherever you are. An appraisal needs the vehicle in front of someone, which is the practical reason trade equity and negative equity get their own page rather than a line on this one — the figure they turn on cannot be produced from a form. Everything else you can have settled before you drive over.

Ready To See Where You Stand?

The four mechanics on this page all feed the same soft-pull application. Apply directly, or call and talk it through with a finance manager first.

1Soft credit pull used for pre-qualification has no impact on credit score and is not visible to other lenders. A hard credit inquiry may occur only at final loan funding after vehicle selection and acceptance of specific terms. Pre-qualification is not a commitment to lend or a guarantee of final terms.
