Kia Warranty · Dean McCrary Kia

Covered Longer, By the Numbers.

10-Year / 100,000-Mile Powertrain · 5-Year / 60,000-Mile Basic

Kia backs a new vehicle with one of the longest warranties in the industry — but “10 years” and “5 years” cover different things, and the difference matters when something breaks. Here is exactly what each warranty protects, how long it lasts, and what keeps it valid.

Wide Coverage First. Then Deep Coverage.

People hear “10-year warranty” and assume everything is covered for a decade. It isn’t — and understanding the split is what keeps a repair bill from being a surprise. Kia gives you broad coverage for the first five years, then long coverage on the most expensive parts.

5-Year / 60,000-Mile New Vehicle Limited Warranty

The broad one — often called the basic or bumper-to-bumper warranty. It covers most vehicle components and systems for 60 months or 60,000 miles from the date of first service, whichever comes first, against defects in workmanship or materials.2

The headline number

10-Year / 100,000-Mile Powertrain Limited Warranty

Narrower, but it lasts twice as long. It picks up where the 5-year/60,000-mile basic warranty ends and runs to 10 years or 100,000 miles from the date of first service, covering the engine, transmission, axles, differentials, and propeller shafts — including internal parts, seals, gaskets, and key assemblies. Available to the original purchaser and to the purchaser of a Kia Certified Pre-Owned vehicle.1

Neither warranty is a maintenance plan. Oil changes, brake pads, wiper blades, tires, and other wear items are your responsibility — and keeping up with them is what keeps the warranties in force. See the factory maintenance schedule for your model.

Also Included

Rust, Roadside, and Getting Home.

Beyond the two core warranties, a new Kia comes with corrosion protection and help when the car stops moving — including when it happens far from home.

5-Yr / 100k-Mi Anti-Perforation

Protects against rust and corrosion, covering perforation from the inside out caused by a factory defect. Surface rust and stone chips are not perforation — worth knowing in Gulf Coast salt air.2

5-Yr / 60k-Mi Roadside Assistance

Towing to the nearest authorized Kia dealer for a warranty-related disablement, plus out-of-gas, flat tire, jump start, and lock-out assistance — from the date the vehicle is delivered.3

Trip Interruption Policy

If a warranty-related breakdown happens more than 150 miles from home and repairs take more than 24 hours, Kia reimburses reasonable meals, lodging, or rental car costs — up to $100 per day for three days, per incident.3

Safety Recalls Are Separate

A safety recall is not warranty work and has no age or mileage limit — repairs are free regardless of how old the Kia is or where you bought it. Check your VIN for open recalls.

Electrified Models

The Battery Is Covered Too.

The single most common question about an EV6, EV9, or Niro EV is what happens to the battery. Kia answers it two ways — one warranty for the hardware, and a separate guarantee about how much capacity the battery keeps.

EV System Warranty — 10 Years / 100,000 Miles

Safeguards the key components of the electric drivetrain for 10 years or 100,000 miles from the date of first service, whichever comes first:

  • Electric motor
  • High voltage battery
  • Electric power control unit (EPCU)
  • On-board charger (OBC)
Capacity, not just failure

EV Battery Coverage — the 70% Threshold

A battery does not have to fail outright to be covered. If capacity drops below 70% of original within 10 years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first, repair or replacement restores the battery to at least 70% capacity.4

Hybrid and plug-in hybrid models carry their own high-voltage component coverage. Ask us for the specifics on the model you are considering — terms differ by powertrain and model year.

The Fine Print That Matters

What Actually Keeps It Valid.

Warranty coverage assumes the vehicle was maintained on Kia’s schedule. Here is the honest version of how that works — including the part most dealers do not tell you.

You Can Service Anywhere — Really

Federal law protects your warranty regardless of where routine maintenance is performed. A dealer cannot void your coverage simply because you had the oil changed elsewhere. What matters is that the factory-recommended service happened on time and that you can prove it.

Where claims go wrong

Documentation Is the Real Requirement

Claims get questioned when there is no record. Service with us and every visit is logged against your VIN automatically — nothing to file, nothing to reconstruct years later. If you service elsewhere, keep every receipt with the date, mileage, and work performed.

What Is Never Covered

  • Routine maintenance and wear items
  • Damage from collision, misuse, or neglect
  • Damage from a modification or non-approved part
  • Neglecting required scheduled service

Buying Used? Check Before You Sign

Remaining coverage depends on the vehicle’s in-service date, its mileage, and whether it is Certified Pre-Owned. Bring us a VIN — ours or anyone’s — and we will tell you exactly what is left. See also the Kia Certified Pre-Owned program.

FAQ

Kia Warranty Questions

How long is the Kia warranty?

A new Kia carries two core warranties: a 5-year/60,000-mile New Vehicle Limited Warranty (the basic or bumper-to-bumper warranty) and a 10-year/100,000-mile Powertrain Limited Warranty, whichever comes first in each case. On top of those you get a 5-year/100,000-mile Limited Anti-Perforation Warranty and 5-year/60,000-mile Roadside Assistance. Electrified models add a 10-year/100,000-mile EV System Warranty and EV Battery Coverage.

Is the 10-year/100,000-mile warranty transferable to a second owner?

The 10-year/100,000-mile Powertrain Limited Warranty is available to the original purchaser and to the purchaser of a Kia Certified Pre-Owned vehicle. If you are buying a used Kia that is not Certified Pre-Owned, do not assume the full 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain term comes with it. Bring us the VIN and we will look up exactly what coverage remains on that specific vehicle before you commit.

What does the powertrain warranty actually cover?

The components that move the car: the engine, transmission, axles, differentials, and propeller shafts, including internal parts, seals, gaskets, and key assemblies. It begins when the 5-year/60,000-mile New Vehicle Limited Warranty expires and runs to 10 years or 100,000 miles from the date of first service, whichever comes first. It is not a maintenance plan — brake pads, wiper blades, and tires are wear items, not powertrain components.

What is the difference between the basic and powertrain warranty?

The 5-year/60,000-mile basic warranty is wide — it covers most components and systems against defects in workmanship or materials. The 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty is narrow but long, protecting only the engine, transmission, and drive components. Wide coverage first, then deep coverage on the expensive parts.

Do I have to service at a Kia dealer to keep my warranty?

No. Federal law protects your warranty regardless of where routine maintenance is performed, as long as the factory-recommended schedule is followed and you can document it. Documentation is what trips people up: a claim can be questioned if there is no record that scheduled service happened on time. When you service with us, every visit is recorded against your VIN automatically — no receipts to keep, no gaps to explain. See your model’s schedule.

Does the warranty cover the hybrid or EV battery?

Yes. The EV System Warranty covers the electric motor, high voltage battery, electric power control unit, and on-board charger for 10 years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first. Separately, EV Battery Coverage addresses capacity loss: if the battery falls below 70% of its original capacity within 10 years or 100,000 miles, repair or replacement restores it to at least 70%. Hybrid and plug-in hybrid models carry their own high-voltage component coverage — ask us about the specific model and year.

What is roadside assistance and the trip interruption policy?

Roadside Assistance runs 5 years/60,000 miles from delivery and includes towing to the nearest authorized Kia dealer for a warranty-related disablement, plus out-of-gas, flat tire, jump start, and lock-out assistance. If a warranty-related breakdown happens more than 150 miles from home and the repair takes more than 24 hours, the Trip Interruption Policy reimburses reasonable meals, lodging, or rental car costs — up to $100 per day for three days, per incident.

Does rust damage count as a warranty repair?

The 5-year/100,000-mile Limited Anti-Perforation Warranty covers perforation — rust that goes all the way through a body panel from the inside out — caused by a factory defect. Surface rust, paint chips, and corrosion from road salt, stone damage, or an unrepaired accident are not covered. Living near Mobile Bay, rinsing the underbody regularly is worth the habit regardless of coverage.

Is a safety recall the same as a warranty repair?

No, and this is a useful distinction. A safety recall is repaired free of charge regardless of the vehicle’s age, mileage, warranty status, or where it was purchased — there is no expiration on a recall remedy. Warranty coverage, by contrast, is bounded by the terms above. Run your VIN against the federal recall database to check for open campaigns.
